Covert – Background
The Covert is an Industrial Heating Control System developed by Independent Heating and Cooling (IHC). We have more than 30 years’ experience installing and maintaining all types of industrial heating appliances – warm air heaters, radiant (infrared) heating and commercial boilers supporting radiators and water matrix fan coils.
Motivation
Companies wasting vast amounts of energy through lack of effective heating controls is something we continue to witness. Often this is due to timers being overridden (perhaps to allow for late working) and then being left on overnight. Frost settings increased to 20 degrees with staff members turning up the thermostat because they feel a little cool, then opening windows and doors because they are too hot. Heaters working unnecessarily when large shutter doors are left open while goods are being loaded into a premises. All of this can simply be down to a lack of understanding or awareness.
Despite manufacturers producing a standard ‘tamper proof’ controller, in reality they are not so ‘tamper proof’. The manufacturers’ controls rely on a four digit access code which often results in incorrect operation, because the code is available among the workforce.
Heating can account for as much as 60% of total energy use. A large proportion of the energy consumed by heating is likely to be wasted due to incorrect control settings. In fact, it is possible to cut heating costs by up to 30% by implementing a good commercial heating control system.

Training & Research
Once training and research had confirmed all of our findings, developing an innovative Commercial Heating Control System became our ambition. Proactive control of heating appliances should not be underestimated, as it can dramatically save on energy costs. Poor control of heating and hot water services is the main cause of excessive energy consumption in many commercial buildings.
In premises with well controlled systems heating fuel consumption is typically 15-30% lower, as specified by the Carbon Trust.
The Carbon Trust and the London School of Economics have also confirmed that a 1 degree C increase in set point results in a 5-10% increase in energy consumption.
Introducing Covert Industrial Heating Controls
By early 2018 we had developed, trialled and brought to market the Covert Heating Control System for Industrial and Commercial premises. Offering complete zonal control of working environments with remote, tamper proof access and early alert system. The Covert has no ongoing maintenance fee (an industry first) other than an annual cloud subscription.
